27 Great Food & Beverage Finds at the 2018 Fancy Food Show

by Lora Wiley-Lennartz

As promised, here is the second part of my two-part blog post coverage of this year’s Fancy Food Show in New York City.

As I’ve said in my previous post. I covered what the equivalent is of 6 football fields full of food product to scout out the best new finds for this blog.

From celebrities to cheese walls to prosciutto dresses, there is definitely something for everyone here.

Top food trends are on display. So whether you are a vegan, vegetarian or follow a keto, low glycemic, paleo or sugar-free diet, there is new food finds to suit your taste.

My last post covered snacks. This post is the rest of what I found to be interesting.

However, I would be remiss in not including these cauliflower based pretzels and crackers made by From the Ground Up  I overlooked in my last write-up. Made with cauliflower, cassava, and other vegan ingredients, One 4.5 oz bag have the nutritional value of  1 serving of vegetables.

The pretzels come in two shapes and the crackers come in three flavors, sea salt, cheddar, and nacho. The cheddar ones are a great substitute for Cheez-Its.

What are crackers without cheese? But have you ever heard of Coconut Cheese?
There are tables after tables of delicious cheeses at the show.  Cheeseland had a large display of their beautifully packaged cheeses but the coconut varieties caught my eye.

Made with fresh, pasteurized cow’s milk, organic coconut cream is added for extra flavor and creaminess. The cheese has a nutty sweet taste. The banana version has a tropical banana flavor.

Mimi’s Mountain Mixes has an entire line of non-GMO, and Vegan beer baking mixes. The mixes also do not have any aluminum, preservatives or soy or trans fat.
I tasted the baked soft beer pretzels and was seriously impressed with the taste and quality. Founded by “Mimi” Lin Johnson after she and many others in her area lost her job in 2007, she created the company out of her local church kitchen retooling her grandmother’s recipes. A portion of every sale is donated to women and children’s shelters.

The Ginger People were showcasing a few interesting products. Their line of Rescue Ginger Shots come in Coconut, Wild Turmeric and Lemon & Cayenne flavors and contain 30% ginger. The shots are not only refreshing, they tout a caffeine-free boost of energy.

The company also makes a Turermic Latte Mix a plant-based powdered mix supercharged with ginger and Curcumin, the power behind turmeric.
Nutpods makes the only completely unsweetened dairy-free creamer. The new delicious vanilla lemon flavor had my attention as well as the fact the company was creatively using their products in recipes like Garlic Cream Pasta and Soba Noodle Peanut Stir Fry. The creamers also come in original, French vanilla, and hazelnut.

TeaRiffic ice cream bosts premium ice creams with natural ingredients infused with specialty blends of loose leaf and herbal teas.

Teariffic makes beautiful flavors like London Mist (Earl Grey/Vanilla), Chamomile (apple/honey), Ginger Matcha and Masala Chai.

In the olive oil category, I had a few good finds. La Vucciria Sicilian olive oil is not only delicious it comes in the most gorgeous packaging. A good food blogger/chef friend of mine always says Olive Oil is the best hostess gift. It’s a useful present way after the party. No wrapping required.

Even though I love rose flavor, it is not one I would think of pairing with olive oil. I admit before I sampled it, I thought it was going to taste like perfume. It did not.  Agrovim is one of the largest olive oil producers in Greece. Iliada is one of their lines. The Rose olive oil is from their platinum line of products. I originally went over to taste their Chocolate olive oil which is outstanding, the rose caught my eye. It’s delicate and beautiful. Perfect for desserts or to drizzle on an edible flower salad.

Extravagonzo makes an exceptional Lemon Meyer Culinary oil. The company makes several other lovely flavors like blood orange,,, but this one was my favorite. Cooking or drizzling, this oil is great for either.

Drinks:

Blue Monkey Sparkling Watermelon Juice contains 55% watermelon juice and 45% lightly carbonated water. Refreshing a delicious. The company also makes a lovely watermelon coconut water.

Caskai is made from the waste product of the coffee drying process, the dried husk of the coffee fruit called Cascara naturally high in antioxidants. Caskai’s Sparkling Cascara infusion contains a light infusion of freshly brewed premium sun dried cascara, a touch of organic cane sugar, a shot of carbonation and tartaric acid. The taste is beautiful and unique.

Focused on the anti-inflammatory muscle recovery properties of cherries, the company target professional athletes and positions the drink as a sports recovery drink. The drink contains pure cherry juice and flavor. It comes in three flavors, plain cherry, cherry blueberry and cherry pomegranate.

Be Mixed all-natural, sugar-free, zero-calorie cocktail mixers are delicious with or without alcohol. I sampled all three flavors, Cucumber Mint, Margarita, and Ginger Lime.these are great to have on hand to mix up quick cocktails for friends or as a delicious non- alcoholic option for nondrinkers in your family and among your guests. Highly recommend.
The coffee beans in  CoffVee, a heart-healthy coffee by the Vera Roasting Company are infused with the antioxidant, resveratrol naturally found in red wine. Each cup of CoffVee delivers the same amount as a glass of wine but without the alcohol, sulfites or tannins. The company also recently launched a Wellness Blend CoffVee with cannabidiol (CBD)  joining last years release of their Sunshine Blend containing 400 IU of Vitamin D to help combat the winter blues as well as providing a boost for bone and heart health.  Yes, CoffVee also comes in decaf, hazelnut Pumpkin Spice versions.

Cocoa Mojo by Enerhealth Botanicals is infused with six different immune-boosting mushrooms and is made with 100% certified organic cocoa powder.

In the tea department, I admit I am partial to flavored green tea and consume a lot of it, mostly iced. This Sweet Honeydew Melon Green Tea from Stash is super delicious. I brought home two tea bags, brewed up a pot and iced it. It’s the perfect summer beverage.

The folks over at The Spice Lab had me captivated sampling their award-winning spice blends in fascinating flavors. Just launched Smoky Pecan was one of my favorites, a Mild blend of sweet pecan smoke and savory flavors.  The company’s new 2018 Silver Sofi Award Winner, Spanish Chorizo Seasoning is a deliciously unique blend of sea salt and spices, with smoked paprika, ground fennel, and garlic.

The company also has a great line of turmeric based blends like Turmeric Seasoning Salt, Honey Soy Turmeric, Spicy Turmeric Seasoning and Turmeric Chicken Seasoning.

Also fun, meeting the lovely couple behind the brand, as I am a fan of their products and already have several in my spice arsenal.

Secret Spice Remedy is a bold bold spice blend that adds flavor, anti-inflammatories & nutrition to your food. Developed by a catering chef to heal her own joint problems, eight of the nine ingredients are anti-inflammatory and/or anti-oxidant.

Essie Spice, created by founder Essie was founded in her mother’s tiny kitchen in Ghana and fueled by her love of travel. Her line had some of the most interesting and beautiful sauce blends I’ve ever seen. The Tamarind OH! is a  blend of Tamarind, Guava, Ginger, and Vanilla great for meats and poultry. She also recommends using it for extra zing in pies or on ice cream. Coco for Garlic is a coconut roasted garlic sauce recommended for use of everything from frittatas to pizza as well as meat, poultry, and fish.

Black Mamba sauces not only bring the heat and the delish, this Swaziland company sources their chilies from local organic farmers. Partnering with Guba, they train small local growers (mainly women) in organic farming and permaculture empowering every grower with a fair trade income. Most of our growers are ‘gogos’ with sole responsibility for their grandchildren. They are overcoming the challenges of HIV, drought, and poverty. Each grower shares their new organic farming knowledge with at least 10 other growers in their community, helping to promote sustainability and improve the soil fertility of Swaziland.

Japan Gold USA had these mouthwatering organic Umami Purees, one with togarashi pepper, one with ginger. The puree is a naturally fermented artisanal sauce made from soy sauce that has been infused with koji cultured rice. It is extremely versatile and has applications in many cuisines and cooking styles-adding umami and liveliness to any dish.
One of my favorite creative food people, The Wild Hibiscus Company makes such beautiful products, they have my full attention every time they launch something new. These Lotus Root Specialty Garnish wheels in flavored syrup will seriously step up your cocktail game. I sampled all three flavors and all are pantry spaceworthy. They contain natural flavors and colors. The butterfly pea elderflower has the magical color changing ability (add lime or lemon juice), the ginger is beautiful and for something savory, the gin spiced pickle juice adds extra flavor oomph. Well done, Wild Hibiscus Company.
Popzest is taking nutritional yeast to the next level with their line of nutritional yeast-based seasonings. Nutritional yeast is rich in plant protein and B-vitamins, specifically B-6 and B-12.  Choose Artisan Cheese, Olive Oil & Herb, or Butter flavors. Nutritional yeast is a great substitute for cheese. These would be especially delicious sprinkled on salads, french fries or popcorn.
The show is packed with chocolate vendors. Much of the chocolate and packaging is stunning. It’s hard to stand out. however, I stopped in my tracks at Milkboy’s White Chocolate Bar with Blue Potato Chips and Sea Salt. Definitely different and definitely. a unique gift or if you, like me, like to fly with snacks, this bar the perfect addition to your food stash for a long flight.
Some other great finds:

I hardly ever stop at baked goods booths because I make everything myself. However, The Vienna Cookie Company was on my list because it was created by an authentic Austrian baker. Heidi Riegler has grooved up several of her grandmother’s recipes. Honestly, I almost fainted when I tasted her Linzer cookies. They were that melt in your mouth good.  when you don’t have the time or skill to do it yourself, order from Heidi.

If you a coffee freak like me and own more than one Nespresso machine, feeding them capsules can get pricey. Belmio has you covered. This Belgian company makes aluminum Nespresso compatible capsules containing beautiful globally sources coffees. The cost averages .29 cents per pod versus Nespresso’s .72 cents.
The winner of the cutest novelty item at the show IMHO was Let Them Eat Candles for their adorable line of edible chocolate candles. Each package contains three candles symbolizing reflection and celebration for one’s Past, Present & Future. The candles are handcrafted and made from premium chocolate (please do not eat the wick) and come in several fun designs.

Lastly, I saw several booths where the sellers were cooking on a slab of pink Himalayan salt and I was instantly intrigued. After tasting steak morsels made this way, I was sold.

This one from WBM International is made from 100% pure Himalayan Pink Salt mined from the Himalayan Mountains and comes in different sizes as well as a round shape. The salt plate adds a naturally rich, salty flavor to the food cooked or grilled on it. It can be placed on top of your stove or BBQ grill for simmering and searing your favorite foods and can hold temperature effectively up to 500F. The salt cooking block also works as a decorative serving platter. Just chill it in the refrigerator if you want to serve cold appetizers on it.

Himalayan salt has become well known for its amazing health benefits. It re-mineralizes the body with minerals and trace elements essential to our health and wellbeing.
So that’s a wrap for this year’s Fancy Food Show. Lot’s of wonderful finds to hold me over Until 2019.
