Sushi Truffles – April Fools!

by Lora Wiley-Lennartz

If you have been following this blog for awhile, you know how much I love to make fake foods. First there were the french fries with “ketchup” and “mayo”.

and then the marzipan weenies in blankets.

Both are cookie ideas. It was only a matter of time before I branched out into making fake foods out of other things. What gave me the idea for these sushi truffles was some leftover fondant that was the color of dark green seaweed, the kind they wrap around sushi.

Since I do not eat seafood or shellfish of any kind, and have never had Sushi, these were created from my imagination and a quick google image search.

Sushi Truffles

You Will Need:

  • White Chocolate Truffles (recipe below)
  • 1″ round cookie cutter
  • Shortening for greasing the cutter
  • Coconut Flakes
  • Fondant
  • Green food coloring
  • Black food coloring
  • Rolling pin
  • Sharp knife
  • unused scouring pad
  • Multi-colored Gelees
  • Black non-pareils

For the White Chocolate Truffles:
(From Joy of Baking)

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces white chocolate chopped
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Directions:

  • Place chocolate in heat proof bowl and set aside.
  • Heat cream and butter together until just boiling
  • Pour the hot cream and butter misture over the chopped chocolate and stir until smooth and chocolate has melted.
  • Refrigerate until firm.

Making the Sushi Truffles:

  • Remove the truffle mixture from the fridge.
  • Grease the cutter and fill it with the truffle mixture. Place it on a plate and gently remove the cutter.
  • Cover the truffle with coconut.
  • Knead the green food coloring into the fondant.
  • Add drops of black coloring and knead until the fondant is a dark green color.
  • Roll out the fondant and using the cookie cutter as a width guide, cut the fondant into strips.
  • Use the steel pad to gently create impressions on the fondant strips to give them texture.
  • Wrap the strips around the truffles and press together to seal.

  • Add the gelees and non pareils to the center of the truffles.
HAPPY APRIL FOOLS’ DAY!!!

A fascinating discussion is definitely worth comment.

There's no doubt that that you should write more about this topic,
it may not be a taboo subject but generally people do not speak about these issues.
To the next! Cheers!!

Heston Blumenthal eat your heart out! You're so clever. I think these would work well with marzipan instead of white chocolate truffles too (for the lazy bones out there like me). 🙂

I would never have known that any of these creations were "faux" from the photographs! I'll eat almost any fish/seafood that comes my way (even raw) but I really am not a fan of sushi. I think it's the cold rice + seaweed combination that I find unpleasant. So, needless to say, I find your faux sushi much more appealing that the real thing!

That's really clever! I'm an expat still in Hamburg… too bad you've left! How long did you live in Germany?

OMG, I thought I was the only person on the planet that did not eat seafood or shellfish of any kind! I could hug you right now. Do you know how many times I've been asked *you can't eat any kind of fish at all* while people looked for another head attached to my shoulders?

Anyway…I think your sushi truffles are awesome and definitely a seafood item I would eat…with pleasure 🙂
