Oscar Cupcakes and Hollywood Walk of Fame Cookies – The Rerun

by Lora Wiley-Lennartz
I posted these cookies and cupcakes I made for a film festival benefit last July. On Oscar eve, I thought they were worth a rerun.

These are a fun addition to any Academy Awards viewing party. The party in July was a benefit for a local film festival. Attendees were asked to come as their favorite movie star. It was more of a classic Hollywood theme so I put the names of iconic film stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame cookies. These of course can be tweaked to add the names of friends attending your party or the names of the current Academy Award nominees. Eating your friends or favorite stars can provide added entertainment value for your viewing party.

Oscar Cupcakes
What You Need:
  • Your favorite cupcake recipe – any flavor
  • Your favorite buttercream recipe (any flavor except chocolate)
  • Fondant – store bought or homemade* already tinted or colored deep yellow. I used Wilton’s golden Yellow.
  • 1 piece of stiff paper, thin cardboard or you can use a lid from a plastic container.
  • Scissors, pen or pencil and glue
  • A printout of an Oscar shape from your computer
  • Baking paper
  • Gold luster or disco dust
  • 1 tablespoon clear drinking alcohol (vodka or rum)
  • Small paintbrush
  • Gold foil cupcake baking cups
  • Red gel or paste food coloring. I used Wilton’s Red Red

*Recipe Below
Directions:
  • Bake cupcakes in foil baking cups and cool completely.
  • Make and color frosting and frost cupcakes.

  • Cut out Oscar shape from printout, glue to stiff surface (paper, cardboard or plastic) and cut out shape.
  • Roll out fondant, place Oscar shape on top and with a small knife cut out the Oscar shape. Repeat until you have enough Oscar shapes for one per cupcake. Lay them out on a sheet of baking paper.
  • Dip your brush in the alcohol and brush it onto the fondant Oscar shape. Then dip your brush into the gold luster or disco dust and spread out the dust on the Oscar shape. Repeat until it is covered completely.
  • Wait 15 minutes or so until the gold finish has dried completely. Using a small spatula or knife gently life the fondant Oscars off of the baking paper and place on the cupcakes.
  • You can pre make the Fondant Oscars the day before. Just wrap them tightly in plastic cling film and store them in a zip lock bag or a sealed plastic container.

Hollywood Walk of Fame Cookies
You Will Need:
  • Your favorite sugar cookie or roll out cookie recipe.
  • Your favorite royal icing recipe.
  • A large square shaped cookie cutter or you can make one by using the method used above for the fondant Oscars.
  • Black gel or paste food coloring. I used Wilton’s Black.
  • Fondant – store bought or homemade* colored pink. I used Wilton’s Pink.
  • A star shaped cookie cutter or make one.
  • White large sized crystal sprinkling sugar
  • A black edible food marker
  • Baking paper
  • Gold luster or disco dust
  • 1 teaspoon clear drinking alcohol (vodka or rum)
  • Small paintbrush

*Recipe Below
Directions:
  • Make your cookies and let cool completely.
  • Roll out the fondant and cut out the stars, one for each cookie.
  • Using the edible food marker, write the desired name on each of the the stars.Dip your brush in the alcohol and outline the fondant stars. Then dip your brush into the gold luster or disco dust and outline the dust on the star shape. Repeat until all stars are outlined.
  • Mix up the icing and add a few drops at a time of the black food coloring until you achieve a dark grey color.
  • Frost the cookies using the outline and fill method. You can find a great tutorial on that HERE.
  • While the icing is wet, sprinkle with the large white sugar crystals. You can avoid the center of the cookie as it will be covered with the fondant star.
  • Affix the fondant stars to the cookies.
  • You can pre make the Fondant stars the day before. Just wrap them tightly in plastic cling film and store them in a ziplock bag or a sealed plastic container.

* For the Homemade For the Fondant: You can buy pre colored store bought versions but I like to make and color my own marshmallow fondant.

Ingredients:
  • 1/2  bag (1/2 pound) marshmallows (minis melt easier but you can use regular sized ones as well.)
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • 1 pound of powdered sugar
  • Crisco or shortening
  • plastic wrap or cling film
  • Gel or paste food coloring
Directions:
  • Cover the inside of a heat safe bowl and a wooden spoon with Crisco or shortening.
  • Place marshmallows and water in the bowl.
  • Microwave the marshmallows for 30 seconds at a time stirring the mixture in between with the wooden spoon.
  • When the mixture is the consistency of Marshmallow Fluff, stir in 3/4 of the powdered sugar one cup at a time.
  • Cover your work surface with powdered sugar and cover your hands with Crisco or shortening.
  • Dump the fondant on the sugared surface and knead the rest of the sugar in.
  • Separate the fondant into different parts and color as desired. When coloring, add a bit of gel color at a time with a toothpick and knead in until the color is evenly distributed and you get the color you want.
  • Wrap each piece in plastic wrap until you use it.
  • Wrap leftover fondant tightly in plastic cling film and store in a zip lock bag.
Enjoy the show!
