Red Wine Rum Coffee Liqueur and January’s LOL Posts

by Lora Wiley-Lennartz
Over the holidays my brother in law’s sister Bettina brought this delicious liquor to Christmas Eve dinner. At first I thought it was a bottle of Masala wine because she called it “Masala” when she offered me a glass. Like most masalas, it was sweet but tasted like something else entirely. It had a red wine base with flavors of brown sugar, vanilla and coffee. I was hooked. She handed over the recipe and I now share it with you.
This liquor is extremely easy to make and a wonderful gift for a hostess or dinner party in the winter months.

Bettina’s Red Wine Rum Coffee Liqueur

Ingredients:

  • 2 bottles of red wine*
  • 1/2 bottle white rum
  • 16 ounces brown sugar rock candy
  • 3 packets vanilla sugar (here in Germany each packet has about 4 tablespoons)
  • 30 coffee beans

Directions:

  • Put all ingredients in a big covered pot and let sit for 2-4 days.
  • Strain and pour into bottles and seal.
  • That’s it.

Oh and you probably want to save the wine bottles to pour the liquor back into or you can buy fancy ones to use as gifts.

* We are red wine snobs here in the Mad Hausfrau household with a closet full of pricey Barolos to prove it.  However, I used the exact wine Bettina used which was Dornfelder Dry Red Wine and costs Euro 2.50 a bottle. The result was perfect so you do not need to use expensive wine. Same goes for the rum.

You can easily double this recipe if you are making gifts. The one above I halved from the one Bettina gave me as she made a large batch to hand out as gifts this year.

Now that we are all sufficiently cyber liquored up, let’s kick back and have some fun.

Here are January’s food blogger posts that amused, entertained or just generally cracked me up:

What an interesting combo! I'm dying to know how the red wine and coffee flavors come together and to experiment with different types of reds.
